DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History

We are thrilled to share that Chris Shedd of Jackson P. Burley Middle School in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been named the recipient of the 2018 Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Teacher of American History Award. The Jack Jouett Chapter, NSDAR, nominated Chris for this prestigious award, and we couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishments. His innovative teaching methods have earned him not only this award but the Virginia State American History Teacher Award as well.

Chris believes that American history teachers need to make their subject come alive for students. To that end, he approached the administrators at Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, about having them do a Google Expedition on Mulberry Row. The project has been finished and is awaiting approval by Google for distribution.

Did history come alive for those students while working on that program at Thomas Jefferson’s home? Will those students remember their time in history class at Burley Middle School in Mr. Shedd’s class? You just know that the answer to both questions is a resounding, ‘YES!’
